Cleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video)
Medical research facility Cleveland Clinic and IBM are teaming up to develop ways to let supercomputer Watson become a useful tool for doctors. The machine's ability to analyze language and scour its database for answers is hoped to offer quicker and more exhaustive diagnoses for patients. As modern medical students spend less time memorizing diseases, they're focusing on learning how to think critically and navigate the huge amount of available data. Big Blue is also hoping that the Jeopardy champion will learn how to digest a person's medical records in order to match up their history with maladies. We're just nervous that someone will give Watson a telepresence robot and send him out onto the wards -- you'd be worried about his bedside manner if you've seen his ruthless quizzing manner.

Chrome Remote Desktop comes out of beta, adds real-time audio feed for Windows users
After a year of living in beta, Chrome Remote Desktop is finally ready for primetime. Similar to other screen sharing services like LogMeIn and Splashtop, Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access other computers remotely. Of course, it is special to the Chrome browser, and by extension, the Chrome OS. The latest version of the app adds a couple of new features like a real-time audio feed for Windows users and the ability to copy-and-paste between remote and local computers. You can use this with any Chrome browser of course, but it could prove especially useful for those with Chromebooks, as you can easily communicate with a presumably storage-laden home PC while still toting around a lightweight notebook.

IBM Labs develops 'initial step' towards commercial fabrication of carbon nanotubes
Commercialization of carbon nanotubes is one of the holy grails of next-gen computing, and IBM thinks it's made crucial steps toward making this a reality. This isn't the first time that we've heard such a claim, of course, but IBM's considerable resources will make this particularly interesting. The specific problem it's been tackling is placing enough semiconducting nanotubes together to be useful in commercial chips, with current attempts being more in the hundreds, rather than billions that would be required. The new approach uses ion-exchange chemistry that allows controlled placement of nanotubes at two orders of magnitude greater than before, with a density of roughly a billion per square centimeter. To achieve this, the nanotubes are mixed with a soap-like substance that makes them water-soluble. Next, a substrate comprising two oxides and a hafnium oxide "trench" is immersed in the soap-solution, which results in the nanotubes attaching to the hafnium oxide canals with a chemical bond. Simple when you think about it! IBM hopes that as the materials and method are readily accessible now, that industry players will be able to experiment with nanotube technology at a much greater scale. Though, as we've become accustomed, there's no solid timescales on when this might realistically unfold.

iFixit Tears Down the 13-Inch MacBook Pro With Retina Display
Apple released the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display on Tuesday, and in true iFixit fashion, the slim notebook has now been dissected to reveal what makes it tick and what it would take to repair one.
The good news is that the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is slightly more repairable than the 15-inch version. Apple’s latest MacBook Pro gets a 2 out of 10 repairability rating, versus the 1 that the 15-inch model scored.
Its battery, for example, while still glued to the top of the case, is easier to remove, taking only 15 minutes and not requiring a heat gun. The trackpad is also replaceable, a process that involves just five screws. Interestingly, the trackpad in both the 13-inch and 15-inch models include flash memory. iFixit doesn’t know the reason, but perhaps future OSX updates could reveal its purpose.
Of course, because of the MacBook Pro’s slim frame, other areas aren’t as easy to fix should something need to be replaced down the line. The compact display assembly is “almost impossible to take apart,” iFixit says, since the display is fused directly to the glass.
iFixit says the most notable internal layout change from the 15-inch to the 13-inch size MacBoook Pros is the new battery cell arrangement, which utilizes asymmetric lithium ion battery technology to maximize space, according to Apple. “This allowed Apple’s designers to cleverly tuck the SSD away underneath the trackpad assembly,” iFixit says. It also means that the maximum amount of space possible was dedicated to this battery.
Although Apple seems to be limiting its use of Samsung-supplied components, the 13-inch Pro carries a Samsung SSD and flash. It uses Hynix-brand SDRAM, though.
I highly recommend heading over to iFixit for the full teardown, if only for the adorable photos of a 21 day old kitten they included this time around.
